| | | How can I make my flowers last longer? | | | | Certain varieties of cut flowers last longer than others. Carnations, for example, can remain vibrant for long periods, where as roses have a shorter vase life.
These simple tips and a little TLC can help add days to your beautiful blooms.
Keep all fresh cut flowers in a cool spot (65-72 degrees F), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, direct drafts or heat sources (including tops of TV's and other appliances).
If flowers arrive in floral foam - keep the foam wet by adding water daily to the arrangement.
If flowers arrive in a vase - keep the vase filled with water and floral food. If the water becomes cloudy, replace it entirely. Recut the stems about 1"-2" by using a sharp knife. Remove any leaves that are below the waterline. Replace flowers in clean vase with fresh water and flower food.
If flowers arrive wrapped - Immediately upon arrival remove water tubes. Find a clean vase or container to display your flowers in. Mix the floral food per the directions on the package. Trim the flowers by cutting off 1" of the stem with a sharp knife or shears and clear away any leaves that are below the water line. Immediatley place the cut flowers in desired vase.
What is floral food and why use it? Floral food is a combination of additives that help to nourish the flowers and discourage bacteria from growing in the water. It is one of the best and easiest ways to extend the life of your flowers. It is important to follow the directions on the package correctly. Improperly mixed floral food can do more harm than good. |
